Letter: Analysis of hemoglobin aggregation from Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium experiments

چکیده
Dear Sir: Gary-Bobo and Solomon (1968, 1971) have employed Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium studies in the assessment o f the anomalous osmotic behavior o f the red cell. In these studies, the interpretation was based on thermodynamic equations for ideal solutions. During the course of recent investigations, we have found that it is necessary to consider the nonideal aspects o f concentrated hemoglobin solutions. In this letter, we have transformed the ideal equations o f Gary-Bobo and Solomon to include nonideal contributions for the interpretation o f hemoglobin-hemoglobin and hemogiobin-solution interactions. Experimentally, Gary-Bobo and Solomon (1968, 1971) measured the Donnan equilibr ium of hemoglobin-potassium chloride solutions. The Donnan ratio, r, is defined in Eq. 1, where [K+]ln is the molal potassium

Binding Effects in Multivalent Gibbs-Donnan Equilibrium
The classical Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium describes excess osmotic pressure associated with confined colloidal charges embedded in an electrolyte solution. In this work, we extend this approach to describe the influence of multivalent ion binding on the equilibrium force acting on a charged rod translocating between two compartments, thereby mimicking ionic effects on force balance during in vitro...
متن کاملQuantitative interrelationship between Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium, osmolality of body fluid compartments, and plasma water sodium concentration.
The presence of negatively charged, impermeant proteins in the plasma space alters the distribution of diffusible ions in the plasma and interstitial fluid (ISF) compartments to preserve electroneutrality. We have derived a new mathematical model to define the quantitative interrelationship between the Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium, the osmolality of body fluid compartments, and the plasma water Na+...

متن کاملAqueous Humor/plasma Chloride Ratios in Rabbits, Dogs, and Human Beings
The ratio of concentration of chloride in the aqueous humor compared with that in the plasma of rabbits, dogs, and human beings, was determined by the Schales and Sendroy methods. Consistent results were obtained in all the experiments by the Schales method with or without protein, and by the Sendroy method without protein. In the presence of protein, however, lower chloride concentrations were...
متن کاملDefining the role of albumin infusion in cirrhosis-associated hyponatremia.
The presence of negatively charged, impermeant proteins in the plasma space alters the distribution of diffusible ions in the plasma and interstitial fluid (ISF) compartments to preserve electroneutrality and is known as Gibbs-Donnan equilibrium. In patients with hypoalbuminemia due to underlying cirrhosis, the decrease in the plasma water albumin concentration ([Alb-]pw) would be expected to r...
